"Cabo Verde is helping to make history in the fight against epidemics in Africa",
Dr. Matshidiso Moeti, World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Director for Africa declared after her visit to Cabo Verde on June 21st and 22nd that she is inspired and happy for the successive gains that Cabo Verde has achieved in the area of health. The Regional Director ascertained that being here in a small country and see all these gains is rewarding and inspiring for the rest of the continent. Thus, she noted that the cooperation between the organization she represents and the country she is visiting is at the highest level of excellence, and it makes all sense to keep working to reinforce these relations.

Significant progress in the health sector in Cabo Verde
Dr. Moeti, the first woman to take the position as the WHO Regional Director for Africa, showed her satisfaction regarding the successes achieved in the area of health in the country. In several occasions, she said that she was very impressed with the health systems development of Cabo Verde, namely in her visit to the Sanitary Region of Santiago North and to the Agostinho Neto Hospital. “Cabo Verde is among the countries with better performances in improving the living conditions of the population, by increasing the life expectancy to 70 years, something unusual in the African region", said Dr. Moeti, stating that "it is very important to understand the health situation in the country, as well as the state of the epidemiological transition, because it is going to reflect upon the dialogue with the Government and in the identification of work priorities".

Deputy Prime Minister stresses the excellent cooperation with the WHO showcased with the organization of the 2nd African Health Forum in Cabo Verde
During the meeting with the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Olavo Correia, the Regional Director showed her appreciation concerning the vision of Cabo Verde for the Health Sector, which she considers to be aligned with the WHO program. The organisation in Cabo Verde of the 2nd African Health Forum was also discussed. The Deputy Prime Minister thanked the excellent relations of friendship and cooperation that has emerged between Cabo Verde and WHO, highlighting the full availability of Cabo Verde so that this joint work can be more cohesive and productive for the well-being of the people of the country.

Cabo Verdean Parliament committed to promoting Health
In the meeting between the WHO Regional Director for Africa and the President of the National Assembly, Jorge Santos highlighted the commitment of his institution with the promotion of Health. On one hand, he talked about the vulnerability of the country, as islands, heavily dependent on foreign resources, especially tourism and he asked the WHO to assist in the prevention and combat to the epidemics. In this regard, the President of the National Assembly called for a reinforcement of the partnerships between the WHO, the Ministry of Health and the Municipalities, which are so important to improve the efficiency of the prevention methods adopted.

Official Launching of the Introduction of the Yellow Fever Vaccine in the National Vaccination Calendar
In the framework of the official visit of the WHO Regional Director for Africa, the Ministry of Health and Social Security, through the National Directorate of Health, held the ceremony of the official launching of the introduction of Yellow Fever Vaccination in the National Vaccination Calendar that took place on June 22nd at the Health Center of Santa Cruz. The Regional Director considered this event to be a milestone for the health of the Cabo Verdean people, which illustrates a great leadership by the Government and the partners in ensuring universal health coverage and access to health for all, because a single vaccination can guarantee a child’s immunity for life.

Joint work with United Nations is a priority for WHO
The United Nations Resident Coordinator in Cabo Verde, Ana Patrícia Graça, welcomed the WHO Regional Director for Africa. They talked about the state of health in the country and about the joint initiatives between UN agencies in Cabo Verde. “It is necessary to make sure a solid capacity in public health in the country and competencies to deliver quality services with focus in guaranteeing that this investment in relevant in topics such as diseases surveillance, prevention and programs and it is strong enough to answer to the existing challenges in health”, noted Dr. Moeti, adding that it is “necessary to structure the work in such a way that it fosters health development in the country”.

|
The visit to the Presidential Palace allowed the Regional Director to know more about the program, Less Alcohol, More Health, an innovative program initiative in the continent lead by the President of the Republic of Cabo Verde. The Head of the Civil House of the Republic, Manuel Faustino, introduced the objectives of the campaign and the key approaches: cross-cutting, integrated and partnerships, as well as the reasons of its conception, to tackle the negative impact of the abusive consumption of alcohol in Cabo Verdean society.

| Visit to the Health Fair during the Anti-vector campaign launching |
|
WHO Regional Director for Africa, Minister of Health and Social Security, Minister of Agriculture and Environment, representatives of the City Council, National Police and the Ministry of Sports, participated in the launching of annual vector fighting campaign, in the neighborhood of Várzea. In her speech, Dr. Moeti pointed out the importance of community engagement in the fight against mosquitoes and the prevention of diseases transmissible by vectors, as well as the multi-facetted approaches of this campaign engaging all actors that support health.

| Meeting with the female MPs |
|
The Regional Director met with the Network of Parliamentarian Women and recognized that Cabo Verde has been doing a good job when it comes to health and wellbeing of the population, families, women and children and it is ahead of many countries with more resources. “I feel comforted for being in the presence of female leaders and I am well impressed by the women empowerment in Cabo Verde”, she added. After these preliminary considerations, she started off the debate with the interlocutors, Lúcia Passos, President of the Network of Parliamentarian Women, and Paula Moeda, President of the 5thSpecialized Parliamentary Commission for Health.

| Visit to the Telemedicine Center of the Agostinho Neto Hospital |

The visit to Agostinho Neto Hospital, in particular to the Center of Telemedicine and to the Hemodialysis Unit, allowed WHO Regional Director to enhance information collection of the health situation in Cabo Verde. “From the visit I made to Agostinho Neto hospital, to the Hemodialysis Unit and to the telemedicine Center, I could notice that the treatment and care here are a good contribution to improving people’s life.
